San Francisco Is Awesome - Four days of radness in the city by the bay.

I went to San Francisco for three reasons: One—was to play a show with my band Kut U Up (we played with Green Day and Ty Segall at a secret show—it was sick!). Two—was to watch and report on the Rip Curl Pro Search “Somewhere In San Francisco” event, and here’s my report. Slater won his 11th World Title, then it was taken away for a day, then he won it back. After that, a 17-year-old Brazilian kid (Gabriel Medina) won the contest. Okay, now for the good stuff. The third reason I went was to spend three days venturing around the city to eat, drink, and walk around looking for fun stuff to buy. I spent a solid day wandering around Japantown eating various types of noodle dishes. Everywhere had ramen and soba varieties- one could wander for days and never eat the same variation. Then I made my way to the market district where I found my fair share of dive bars, which suited the drizzly, grey day. Finally, my last and greatest discovery- the epicenter of the world’s greatest chachkis* (Chachkis are what my wife calls the little figurines and crap I buy at 99-cent stores). My total haul was a shiny silver and white Mexican wrestler mask, an Inca wool hat, six jade Buddha statues, and one amazing velvet painting of a wolf howling at an eagle with two dolphins jumping in the shape of a heart underneath—fantastic. I didn’t eat any Rice-a-Roni— a.k.a. “The San Francisco Treat” on my trip, but I did sample the Bay Area’s finest digs, many of which included fresh and local items on the menu—the farm-to-table movement is hot in SF right now.
Luckily, lots and lots of uphill and downhill walking between meals helped keep me lean and mean. Most foodies already know that SF stands for Super Food, but if you didn’t know, you better recognize, get up to the bay, and start eating.
