Eat, Surf, Then Really Eat.

There’s a certain balance one must reach when it comes to pre-surf eating. Remember what your mom used to say? “Wait 30 minutes to swim after eating”—she warned of cramps and other demons that you’d be stricken with if you broke the 30-minute post-meal barrier and jumped in a pool. Sometimes it pays to listen to your mom, especially in this instance. Surfing after a big meal summed up in one word is—sucky. There’s nothing worse than trying to paddle through early a.m. waves while laying on top of a big balled-up breakfast burrito, if you’ve never done it, put a softball on the ground and lay on top of it; doesn't feel good, does it. The other side of the surf-food coin is surfing on a totally empty stomach. Surfing takes a lot of energy, and if you are starving, you’ll be feeling weak and woozy, making your surf experience exactly that—weak and woozy. The best pre-surf food situation would be a handful of nuts and a banana—I think this is what Kelly Slater eats before heats. Rob Machado recommends an acai bowl with some nuts on top—not a huge bowl, just a bowl big enough to give you energy enough for a two-hour session. Most Americans over-eat and surfers are no different. My best advice would be to eat a small healthy snack that provides the protein to carry you through, on, and around the waves you’re trying to surf—seven donuts and three cups of coffee may sound like an ideal pre-surf meal, but trust me, you will be surfing like an overweight sloth. Kelly Slater often says that his diet is one of the main reasons why he’s still out there whipping on the youngsters with such ease. Eat well—surf better.
Now the after surf meal, that’s whole different ballgame ... Treat yourself right, you just surfed up a healthy appetite. I wonder what flavor coffee best compliments a chicken sandwich with donuts for bread?

Daphne's Asks. Josh Benjoya Answers.

Daphne’s
Team Rider Josh Benjoya is on our radar this month and
with only 15 years of living under his belt he’s already building quite the
resume with NSSA, WSA and CSF competition placings. Here’s what we learned when
we sat down for a quick Q & A with this Dana Point, CA local.
D. What has been your biggest
accomplishment in the past 15 years?
J. My
biggest accomplishment would probably have to be getting a 4.0 GPA in 6th and
7th grade.
D. If you could be a pro athlete in any sport besides surfing, what would it
be?
J.
Basketball
D. What is your best subject in school?
J. Math
D. What is your go-to snack to fuel up before a contest?
J. I will
usually just grab water, a banana and a granola bar.
D. How do you EAT WELL, LIVE WELL?
J. My Mom is an
excellent cook and she makes us great meals all the time, but she also works
full time so sometimes we go out. Daphne's has been a perfect fit for our
family. I live well by exercising two times a week with DSC Performance (a surf specific training program that helps you with all
things surfing). I also enjoy basketball, skateboarding, surfing of course and spending good times with
my friends and family.

DAPHNE’S ASKS, KULIA ANSWERS
Posted By: Daphne's
Categories: California Greek Culture, Daphne's Asks, Daphne's California Greek, Daphne's Team Rider, Exercise, Fitness, healthy living, Kulia Doherty

With Lahaina Harbor, Maui as her home break, Kulia Doherty was born to surf. By the age of 10
she was already competing and winning major competitions and today at age 15, continues
to rip through some of the world’s toughest waves. This year alone she has
placed 3rd in the NSSA National Championship Explorer Women, 2nd
in the NSSA National Championship Explorer Girls and 1st in the
recent Nike
Surfing America Prime presented by Got Milk?.
We wanted to hear more from the young talent and sat down with Kulia for a
quick Q & A.
D. What
other activities do you enjoy when you're not in the water?
K. Tennis, biking, skating and jogging on the beach. I hate
yoga.
D. What
does your ideal day look like?
K. Being dragged out of bed at 5 am to
find perfect, glassy, uncrowded waves. And after a good session, go to Daphne's
for lunch. Then maybe go skating around town with some of my friends and watch
some surf videos of Kelly Slater… I like to study his style.
D. How do
you balance school and training?
K. Balance is the key word. They are both important to me and I
definitely enjoy doing both and trying to be the best I can at what I'm doing.
I do spend a lot of time on my studies, and obviously a lot of time surfing
too.
D. Do you
have a secret talent?
K. I'm a human GPS system. When people
get lost driving around, I always figure it out and know which way to turn. I'm
very proud of my ability. Ha ha
D. How do
you EAT WELL, LIVE WELL?
K. Drink a lot of water (being in the sun so much dries out
your skin), stay stretched which helps me avoid injuries, get plenty of rest,
learn something new everyday, eat hearty meals at Daphne's, and just keep
having fun.

San Francisco Is Awesome - Four days of radness in the city by the bay.
Posted By: Chris Cote
Categories: Daphne's California Greek, Daphne's Team Riders, EAT WELL, Food in San Francisco, Kelly Slater 11th World Title, restaurant in san francisco, Rip Curl Pro

I went to San Francisco for three reasons: One—was to play a show with my band Kut U Up (we played with Green Day and Ty Segall at a secret show—it was sick!). Two—was to watch and report on the Rip Curl Pro Search “Somewhere In San Francisco” event, and here’s my report. Slater won his 11th World Title, then it was taken away for a day, then he won it back. After that, a 17-year-old Brazilian kid (Gabriel Medina) won the contest. Okay, now for the good stuff. The third reason I went was to spend three days venturing around the city to eat, drink, and walk around looking for fun stuff to buy. I spent a solid day wandering around Japantown eating various types of noodle dishes. Everywhere had ramen and soba varieties- one could wander for days and never eat the same variation. Then I made my way to the market district where I found my fair share of dive bars, which suited the drizzly, grey day. Finally, my last and greatest discovery- the epicenter of the world’s greatest chachkis* (Chachkis are what my wife calls the little figurines and crap I buy at 99-cent stores). My total haul was a shiny silver and white Mexican wrestler mask, an Inca wool hat, six jade Buddha statues, and one amazing velvet painting of a wolf howling at an eagle with two dolphins jumping in the shape of a heart underneath—fantastic. I didn’t eat any Rice-a-Roni— a.k.a. “The San Francisco Treat” on my trip, but I did sample the Bay Area’s finest digs, many of which included fresh and local items on the menu—the farm-to-table movement is hot in SF right now.
Luckily, lots and lots of uphill and downhill walking between meals helped keep me lean and mean. Most foodies already know that SF stands for Super Food, but if you didn’t know, you better recognize, get up to the bay, and start eating.

Is Slater an Alien?
Posted By: Chris Cote
Categories: Billabong Tahiti Pro, Daphne's Team Riders

Kelly Slater just won yet another surf contest in some of the biggest
most challenging waves the world has ever seen for a surf competition.
There is no questioning that Kelly is the best surfer to ever ride a
board, but what's truly amazing is the fact that as one of the oldest
surf competitors left on the World Tour—Kelly is still surfing better
than everyone! He truly seems to be getting better with age. So what’s
his secret? Did he make a deal with the devil? Does he have magical
powers? Is he an alien? If you watched him surf at the Billabong Tahiti
Pro this year, all these theories wouldn’t be out of question. With all
the questions and speculation about how and why Kelly Slater is still
the best in the world after a decade of domination, the answer is pretty
simple- Kelly Slater takes care of himself. "You have to eat a good
spectrum of different foods,” said Kelly in a 2010 interview. "The
amount of sugar and processed foods the average American eats is
unbelievable."
Kelly will be the first person to tell you that he believes 100% that
diet, stretching, and exercise is the key to success not only in sports
but in life as well. "I just feel better when I eat good food," Kelly
says. 'There’s no real secret, just eating right, staying active, doing
my best to live a clean lifestyle."
So no, Kelly Slater is not an alien, he is a freakishly talented
individual and ten years from now, when he’s still schooling surfers
half his age in the ways of modern surfing—no one will be surprised,
especially not Kelly.
